![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() An ex-Marine with a stern sense of duty, the Bureau's Assistant Director Walter Skinner sometimes has little patience with Mulder's unorthodox methods of investigation. More than once he has warned Mulder and Scully that their inquiries were crossing into dangerous territory. He has also been forced to shut down the X-Files, but decided to reopen them on his own authority.
Skinner seems to be caught between two agendas: agents Mulder and Scully on one side and the Cigarette-Smoking Man on the other. Frequent visits by the CSM portray Skinner as another Syndicate lackey, but his efforts on behalf of Mulder and Scully "through unofficial channels" clearly show his concern for the agents and their work. Still, Krycek has proven that the Assistant Director can never be released from the hold of those in power. The ex-Agent holds the console that can increase the amount of nanotechnology machines in Skinner's blood stream.
While he has never been fully convinced of Mulder's alien theories, Skinner is astonished to see a bright light flash across the sky and witnesses Mulder disappear in "Requiem" (7X22). He is filled with emotion as he later recounts the events to Scully. "I'll be asked what I saw," he says. "And what I saw I can't deny. I won't."

![]() Handsome, charming, and well-spoken, the perfidious Agent Alex Krycek worms his way into the confidence of Fox Mulder in "Sleepless" (2X04), where he plays the role of a worshipful junior FBI agent. But his true allegiance emerges when he warns the Cigarette-Smoking Man that separating Mulder and Scully has not unhinged their partnership.
The darker side of the double agent (whom Internet fans have dubbed "Ratboy" for his faithlessness) appears even more clearly in the dual episodes "Duane Barry" (2X05) and "Ascension" (2X06), where he is instrumental in the abduction of Agent Scully and the silencing of Duane Barry. His treachery exposed, Krycek disappears from the Bureau, only to become a greater threat underground. In "Anasazi" (2X25), he murders Mulder's father.
Krycek's freelance status allows him to become the CSM's chief henchman, but his boss turns on him and sends him to a Tunisian prison. CSM eventually has him released for more dirty work, but Krycek gets his revenge. Although Mulder never loses his suspicion of the traitor, he is helped by Krycek in "Requiem" (7X22). The real question is, can Krycek be trusted or is he merely working on his own behalf?

The man behind the cloud of smoke seems to constantly have his hand in the affairs of the X-Files, and his presence serves as a warning that the shadow government is using Mulder as a pawn in their game.
The tension between Mulder and the Cigarette-Smoking Man has steadily increased as the man with the pack of Morleys not only involves himself in Mulder's work, but also has been responsible for several attempts on the agents' lives. In "One Breath" (2X08), Mulder blames CSM for the abduction of Scully, and comes within a trigger-pull of killing him. But Mulder later learns that the CSM has connections with Mulder's parents and was a major player in his sister Samantha's abduction.
Mulder and Scully uncover his real name, C.G.B. Spender (although this too may merely be another alias), when they learn that his ex-wife is abductee Cassandra Spender. The CSM had his son Jeffrey assigned to the X-Files after Mulder and Scully are taken off the unit, but young Agent Spender proved a disappointment to his father. The CSM ultimately kills off his own son in "One Son" (6X12).
In "The Sixth Extinction: Amor Fati" (7X04), Mulder's alien DNA is transferred to the CSM in order to make him a hybrid. But the procedure caused a cerebral inflammation in the elusive smoker. Although the old man is already dying, his former mercenary, Krycek, tosses the CSM down a flight of stairs in "Requiem" (7X22).

![]() ![]() Agent John Doggett joined the FBI from the New York City Police Department, where he served as a Detective in the Fugitive Division's Warrant section. Approaching all of his investigations like a doubting cop, he believes that everything can be explained with standard police techniques. So it is no surprise that after only five years at the Bureau, he is assigned by Deputy Director Kersh to run the task force looking for Mulder. Although he may be set up to fail, Doggett has resigned himself to solve the case.
Masters and doctoral degrees in Public Administration from Syracuse University prove Doggett's willingness to conform to the government's blueprint. He is the consummate insider on the fast track to success. Previous to his police work, Doggett held the rank of Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps' Amphibious Unit and played a role in the Multi-National Peacekeeping Force for Lebanon Development. With six years in the military, he retired with commendations after being wounded in the line of duty.
![]() Although born in Austin, Texas, Monica Reyes was adopted by Mexican parents and raised in Mexico. She has never identified her birth parents.
She majored in folklore and mythology at Brown University, earning her bachelors and masters degrees in four years. After considering an academic career, she instead enrolled at Quantico in 1990. Reyes' first FBI assignment was to serve on a special task force investigating claims of Satanic ritual abuse. None of the charges was ever substantiated, and a report was issued in 1992.
Reyes then served in the New York City field office, where among her cases was the kidnapping of 8 year-old Luke Doggett, son of New York City police officer John Doggett. The boy was eventually found dead, but no suspect was ever apprehended. In 1999, she transferred to the New Orleans field office. She remained there until the former cop-turned FBI Agent Doggett convinced her to accept a post on the X-files unit in Washington, DC.
